Wales Air Ambulance is saying a big ‘thank you’ to its volunteers for the vital contribution they have made to the work of the lifesaving charity over the past 25 years.
The tribute comes as the Charity celebrates National Volunteers’ Week, which runs from Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June.
Now in its 42nd year, the week recognises thousands of volunteers across the UK who give up their time to support charities and organisations.
Wales Air Ambulance relies on its volunteers in many ways, and their support helps ensure the service can operate 24/7, 365 days a year, providing pre-hospital critical care to the most seriously ill and injured people throughout Wales.
This year is especially significant for the all-Wales Charity as it marks its 25th anniversary, a milestone that would not have been possible without the support of the public and its dedicated volunteers.
Dr Sue Barnes, Wales Air Ambulance Chief Executive, said: “Our volunteers are incredibly important to us, and we would not be celebrating our 25th anniversary year without them. They are ambassadors for the Charity, giving their time in a variety of ways to raise both awareness and funds for our critical lifesaving work.
“National Volunteers’ Week is a wonderful opportunity to thank them and recognise just how special they are to us. Their dedication and commitment to our service are incredible. We simply could not deliver our day-to-day work without their support. Our volunteers are at the heart of our Charity.”
There are many different volunteering roles within Wales Air Ambulance, whether in the community, in retail, or by giving talks. Each role offers something in return. For those who cannot commit to a set number of hours each week, the Charity also welcomes ad hoc support and can find an opportunity that works for the volunteer.
Liz Katz has been volunteering with Wales Air Ambulance since December 2025, contributing both in retail and in a brand-new community-facing role.
After relocating to the area to be closer to family, Liz began looking for ways to connect with her new community.
Her volunteering journey began by chance. While shopping in Wrexham with her husband, Liz noticed an item in the charity shop window. After going inside to make a purchase, the couple had such a positive experience that, as she was leaving, Liz spotted a ‘volunteer with us’ poster and decided to apply.
Liz, who previously ran a highly successful business for 30 years, brought with her a wealth of experience and a strong desire to make a meaningful local contribution. She quickly became a valued and inspiring member of the volunteer team.
Volunteering has given Liz exactly what she had hoped for after moving to the area: connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging in her new community.
She said: “I’ve recently moved to the area and wanted to meet people and get to know the community. Volunteering for such an important local charity felt like a privilege.
“I really understand the impact Wales Air Ambulance has, and giving my time felt like a no-brainer.”
Graham Hirst, from Swansea, is a stalwart volunteer for Wales Air Ambulance. He was recently recognised at the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan Awards 2026 for his long-standing service to the charity.
Graham is a well-known face at the Charity’s Dafen headquarters in Llanelli.
A great deal has changed since Graham began volunteering, but what has remained constant is his dedication to the cause. He can always be relied upon to help where needed, from giving talks to groups, to sorting cash boxes and supporting fundraising campaigns.
Graham decided to volunteer after taking early retirement. He said: “I work with a great bunch of people. They’re very dedicated. When I see that helicopter go up, it’s lovely. We are part of that. People’s lives are being saved because of our volunteers.”
The Charity needs to raise £13 million every year to keep its helicopters in the air and its rapid response vehicles on the road.
Volunteering is open to people of all ages and abilities, offering opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people, and make a meaningful difference.
Speaking about the benefits of volunteering, the Charity’s Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Danielle Higgins, said: “Volunteering is an excellent opportunity to make friends, gain new skills and experience, and it also looks great on your CV. It can have a positive impact on your own well-being, while also making a real difference to others.
“Previous experience is not required, and you can choose the hours you volunteer. If you are over 18 years old, enthusiastic, and willing to support the Charity, we would love to have you on board.
“By volunteering for us, you will help raise the profile of Wales Air Ambulance, support others in the community, and help the Charity continue its lifesaving work across Wales.”
