PHEM Trainees

Our PHEM (Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine) Trainees are registrar-level doctors undertaking training in pre-hospital emergency medicine and may be supervised directly or indirectly, and they can deliver the same interventions as an EMRTS consultant.

The PHEM training programme is an opportunity for training grade doctors in Emergency in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine or Acute Internal Medicine to undertake sub-specialty training in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine within professionally supported and well-governed clinical services. It is aimed at those individuals whose long-term career aspirations involve a significant component of Pre-hospital Emergency Care work. Successful completion of the training programme results in a sub-specialty accreditation in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine

The training involved…

During a 12-month full-time training program, trainees undertake a month Phase 1a of the program, which includes attending the national induction course as well as local induction training before completing five months of Phase 1b training with a high degree of consultant supervision. Following successful completion of a local Phase 1 summative “sign off” assessment, trainees are then able to deliver full pre-hospital critical care with remote consultant supervision and will lead the EMRTS duty teams by day and night, providing full pre-hospital critical care with remote supervision throughout Phase 2.

The trainees work across all our bases, gaining experience to ‘whole system’ pre-hospital critical care practice. Trainees also benefit from close partnerships with the Welsh Ambulance Service, the Adult Critical Care Transfer Service (ACCTS Cymru), regional Community Emergency Medicine Programs and other emergency response agencies to gain exposure to the full breadth of PHEM practice.

PHEM training within Wales offers a unique opportunity to experience a blend of rural and urban PHEM practice within a national NHS system delivering world class care to the people of Wales.

Clinical Fellows

Our clinical fellows are junior doctors seeking experience in pre-hospital care as part of a job working within a local hospital.

The fellowship program is designed for clinicians who want to improve their clinical skills and knowledge of critical care medicine.

In most cases, when clinical fellows work alongside a CCP-led team, they must work within the scope of practice of the CCP team. Only when working alongside an EMRTS consultant can they operate to the full scope of practice.

Critical Care Practitioner Fellows

The Critical Care Practitioner Fellowship programme is a development role which enables fellows to work alongside critical care teams for a 12-month period, gaining valuable experience and improving knowledge and skills in pre-hospital and transfer medicine.

The CCPF is a voluntary role, working approximately 24 shifts (ideally 2 per month) on both road and air transport platforms.

The programme is designed to provide an opportunity to those clinicians who don’t yet have the necessary qualifications or experience working within this environment. The role involves working alongside motivated colleagues, enabling you to increase your knowledge in critical care with exposure to high acuity incidents.

Throughout the fellowship I have been fortunate to attend a variety of medical and trauma incidents and inter hospital transfers and have had the pleasure of working alongside experienced pilots, CCP’s and doctors.
