The Medics On Board

Our critical care teams are made up of a mixture of critical care consultants and critical care practitioners. Together, they deliver pre-hospital critical care to the patient. To provide training opportunities to those wishing to work in the pre-hospital environment, we also have fellowship and training programmes, so the team sometimes have an additional crew member known as the ‘third seat’.

Every critical care team is made up of at least two clinicians, this can be a double CCP crew or a consultant and CCP.

Critical Care Consultants

Our consultants are from emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care backgrounds. Their involvement with the service is included in their existing NHS job plan alongside their in-hospital work.

Critical Care Practitioners

Our critical care practitioners (CCPs) are a team of highly trained practitioners who have joined the service from a paramedic or nursing background.

Through a mixture of different training programmes, doctors and clinicians can train with our critical care teams to enhance their pre-hospital skills.
