Trefonen Hill Walk is set to be another great weekend

5 minute read

The Trefonen Hill Walk weekend looks set to be another wonderful few days in aid of two important charities.

The popular community event, which has grown from one walk to a programme full of walking challenges and activities, will take place next month (Friday 22 May to Monday 25 May).

In over 30 years the event has raised thousands for local and international charities and causes, this year the Hill Walk Committee has chosen to raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance and War Child UK.

This is the first time the committee has chosen the Wales Air Ambulance as its charity partner. The Charity was chosen because some of the community are past patients of the service.

The Hill Walk takes place over the spring bank holiday in May, and different activities are planned for all the family. Over the whole weekend approximately 1000 people will take part in the different activities available.

There will be walks for all ages and abilities, a murder mystery night, hill run, duck race, quiz, motorcycle trial, family fun day, talent show and much more.

Dominic and Julie Cole, who are part of the Hill Walk Committee, said: “For the past couple of years we’ve liked a hill walk challenge!

“This year’s challenge is a 24-hour relay walk from Trefonen to the trig point at the Moelydd, which will see a team of people to walk continuously for 24 hours. We are inviting friends, families, individuals and groups to join in with the challenge!”

The weekend will kick off on Friday with the Moelydd 24-hour relay walk and there will also be a murder mystery night held at Trefonen Village Hall.

The Across the Cynllath walk will take place on Saturday 23 May. Participants have a choice to walk 10 or 16 miles starting from Trefonen Village Hall.

There will be the motorbike trial in the afternoon at New Barns Farm and to end the day there will be a quiz held at Trefonen Village Hall.

The hill run will take place on Sunday 24 May, which will be followed by a family afternoon, which will include a duck race, rounders, orienteering, BBQ, bar, artisan market and a car meet.

Monday 25 May is the final day of the event and will see the family walks take place. On offer there will be a 3-mile Curlew Walk or 6-mile Buzzard Walk starting from Trefonen village. Refreshments are available at New Barns Farm.

The day will conclude with the popular talent show at Trefonen Village Hall.

Wales Air Ambulance provides consultant‑led emergency care, delivering hospital‑level treatment directly to patients and transporting them to the most suitable hospital when needed.

The service operates through a partnership between the third sector and public sector, relying on public donations to raise the £13 million required annually to keep helicopters and rapid response vehicles operational.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) provides specialist NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work onboard, offering advanced interventions such as anaesthesia, blood transfusions and minor surgical procedures at the scene.

As a pan‑Wales service, crews travel across the country to deliver lifesaving care wherever it is needed.

Kate Thomas, Regional Fundraising Manager for Wales Air Ambulance, said: “A huge thank you to the organisers for picking the Wales Air Ambulance as one of its charities to benefit from this wonderful fundraiser. They have once again chosen two important charities to raise funds for. We’re really grateful to be one of those chosen to benefit from this fundraiser, after members of the community needed our service.

“The weekend is a fun filled weekend filled with lots to do for people of all ages. It is always a popular event and a huge success, which is credit to the organisers. It is definitely one not to miss.

“Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise £13 million every year to keep our helicopters in the air and our rapid response vehicles on the road. Fundraisers, like this one, will help us reach that yearly target. Every pound raised over the weekend will help save lives across Wales.”
