One of Wales’ oldest cathedrals is using the power of music to attract new audiences and raise funds to preserve its heritage and help save lives.
Llandaff Cathedral’s construction began in the 12th century, and it has undergone seven renovations and restorations over the centuries. It continues to be a place of worship and community gatherings,
Chief Executive Geraint Williams said: “Our cathedral is among the oldest in Wales and has hosted many prestigious events over the centuries.
“It costs £3,000 a day to run, and therefore we need to fundraise to ensure its preservation. But each year we launch a lent appeal in the run up to Easter in aid of several Charitable projects.
“This year as Wales Air Ambulance marks its 25th anniversary, we felt it important to give thanks for all the incredible work carried out by the service every day across Wales.”
The iconic landmark is fast becoming one of the most coveted locations to attend candlelight concerts in the UK.
Over the past few months, music lovers have been treated to a variety of tribute acts including Meat Loaf, Bruce Springsteen and Prince.
Geraint said: “There is a whole moment around candlelight concerts, and we have such an incredible venue to facilitate these types of events.
“Our concerts are hugely popular and sell out in advance. We had over 1,000 people attend the Meat Loaf and Bruce Springsteen concerts.”
Llandaff Cathedral also hosts silent discos, which Geraint says is ‘opening the venue up to younger generations.’
He continued: “We have a very mixed audience in terms of age, but probably a lot younger than are normally in our congregation on a Sunday.
“Although I have to say our congregation is very strong and we have one of the biggest Sunday schools in the UK with over 270 children.”
Llandaff Cathedral raised over £3,153 for Wales Air Ambulance as part of its Lent Appeal.
Geraint said: “The service has touched so many lives and is very cherished. We wanted to show our appreciation by donating a share of the funds raised by our candlelight concerts throughout Lent.
“We’ve heard so many fantastic stories of how Wales Air Ambulance is making a difference in so communities. People feel very passionately about its lifesaving work, so we look forward to making a generous donation to the Charity.”
Mike May, Wales Air Ambulance Regional Fundraising Manager said: “There is nothing quite like hearing ‘Dead Ringer’ or ‘I’m on Fire’ performed at Llandaff Cathedral! It is a sight to behold.
“We are hugely grateful to the artists and musicians who made the incredible candlelight concerts possible and drew a very big crowd.
“They donated so generously to Wales Air Ambulance. Every pound raised will make a lifesaving difference.
“We wish to extend a huge thank you to Llandaff Cathedral for its incredible support during Lent.”
