A family fun day aims to make a lifesaving difference over the August bank holiday with a fundraiser in aid of Wales Air Ambulance
Penarth Conservative Club is organising a hog roast and activities for the whole community on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
Chairwoman Michaela Guy comes from a long line of Conservative Club members. Her grandparents ran the venue in the 1950s, her mother worked there and her stepdad was also a committee member.
The 59-year-old said: “The club has evolved over the years, and we have over 1,000 members, which is incredible.
“We are much more community focused these days and are a charitable bunch. We love to support local projects and organisations whenever we can.
“One of our committee members, Gabby Sagastume, volunteers for Wales Air Ambulance and suggested them as our chosen charity for our get together.
“It’s such a worthy cause, and we hope to raise quite a bit on the day.”
She added: “A lot of the local businesses in the area are supporting our event and have been very generous, donating prizes.
“We will have a live band too, to keep everyone entertained, then there will be a hog roast and an alternate option for our vegetarian attendees.
“There will be plenty of ways for people to help raise funds and win prizes. We have a raffle, auction and tombola.”
Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and, if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury.
It is delivered via a unique third-sector and public-sector partnership. The Wales Air Ambulance Charity relies on public donations to raise the ÂŁ13 million required every year to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.
The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the Charity’s vehicles.
This advanced critical care includes the ability to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations, all at the scene of an incident.
As a pan-Wales service, its dedicated crews, regardless of where they are based, will travel the length and breadth of the country to deliver emergency lifesaving care.
“Thankfully no one in our team, has ever needed Wales Air Ambulance”, Michaela said, “but it is reassuring to know it is there, if we should.
“It’s unbelievable what the crew can do, I did not realise it took the emergency department to the patient, it’s such an essential service.”
Penarth Conservative Club will mark its centenary in 2027 and is planning a series of events to mark the special occasion.
“We are very proud, that after a hundred years, we are still here supporting the local community.
“Members do have to pay a fee to be part of the club, but we welcome non-members too. If they wish to hire our rooms for an event, they can do so.”
