Registering the death

Once a cause of death has been established, the death must be registered and a death certificate obtained. The death needs to be registered by a relative of the deceased within 5 days of receipt of the death certificate. As mentioned above when the death is sudden or unexplained the coroner may order a postmortem. It is only after this, and any other investigation have been completed that the coroner will issue the death certificate.

To register the death, you need to contact the local registry office in the jurisdiction where your loved one has died to book an appointment. You will need to provide information such as:

  • Personal details of the person
  • Date and place of death.

You will be given one death certificate, but you do have the option to pay for additional copies. These are often needed to help with managing their estate as most companies will not accept photocopies.
