Joanna’s story
While on holiday in Wales, Joanna and her friend went for their usual morning swim at Newgale beach. However, Joanna, a confident and strong swimmer, was caught in a rip current and got into difficulty.
Her friend Philippa managed to swim back to shore and she and her partner Bob called 999 for help. Multiple agencies responded, including RNLI lifeguards and lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter and ambulances.
After being in the water for around 40 minutes, Matty a RNLI lifeguard found Joanna and pulled her ashore. Joanna went into cardiac arrest and Wales Air Ambulance was dispatched to give her the critical care interventions she needed to survive.
Her heart had stopped three times, and her chance of survival was just 1%.
Following resuscitation attempts, the Wales Air Ambulance provided Joanna with a pre-hospital anaesthetic and placed her on a ventilator. This form of life support enabled the team to take over her breathing, and to minimise the risk of long-term brain damage.
The treatments Joanna received would usually only be available within a hospital setting, but thanks to the advanced clinicians on board Wales Air Ambulance, Joanna received the care she needed to survive on the beach, before being flow to intensive care.
“I was given a 1% chance of survival on the beach that day, and if the Wales Air Ambulance helicopter had not flown the medics right to me, I would not be alive today. I cannot thank them enough for what they did for me.”
Joanna and Pilot James reunited on Newgale Beach.
Ioans story:
The Watts family were celebrating their youngest son Rhodri’s birthday when it became a birthday to remember for all the wrong reasons.
Ioan was playing on his scooter in the garden shed, but the fun soon stopped when he slid across the concrete and fell 8ft over a ledge headfirst, leaving him fighting for his life.
Due to the nature of Ioan’s injuries, the Wales Air Ambulance dispatched two critical care teams – one by air and one by road. Upon arrival, it was immediately clear to the team that Ioan was extremely poorly; he was unconscious, having a seizure and his airway was blocked.
There and then in Ioans back garden, the critical care team cleared his airway and gave him medication to stop the seizure. They also delivered a pre-hospital anaesthetic and placed him on a ventilator, helping to protect his brain. Before transporting him to a Paediatric Trauma Centre.
Jez James, one of the medics on board Wales Air Ambulance that day, said: “Ioan was an incredibly poorly young boy, one of the sickest I’ve come across.”
Ioan’s grateful mum Lydia said: “After 3 weeks in a coma, and emergency brain surgery, Ioan began his slow recovery, learning to walk, talk and do almost everything he could do before his accident. He worked so hard and after 3 months in hospital, he came home to continue his recovery.”
