UNIVERSITY RUGBY TEAM STRIVE FOR SUCCESS IN CYCLE FUNDRAISER A University rugby team have cycled over 800 miles in aid of Wales Air Ambulance. Aberystwyth University’s Women’s Rugby team collectively cycled a total of 874 miles on six stationary bikes at the university campus. The total distance equates to cycling from John O’Groats in North-East Scotland to Lands End in Cornwall - the entire length of Britain. They began their arduous mission at 8am on Friday the 7th of December and completed the challenge in an incredible 8 hours and 27 minutes. Team committee member, Amy Best, who also participated in the fundraising event chose Wales Air Ambulance following very personal circumstances: “In January 2016, I was involved in a serious road traffic accident near Aberystwyth. Wales Air Ambulance flew to my aid and I was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff. “After receiving surgery and the very best care in Cardiff, I was discharged and then began the road to recovery.” As a result of the severity of Amy’s injuries, it took over a month before signs of improvement began to show. Amy added: “The committee and I are overwhelmed by the support we have received for this event. To raise £800 before even sitting on a bike is incredible. We cannot thank our friends and family and members of the public enough for their continued support. “Personally, this event means so much to me. I will never be able to repay those that saved my life on that day, but I hope that this donation will help the charity save more lives like mine.” Wales Air Ambulance Community coordinator, Aneurin Roberts said: “We would like to say a very big thank you to Amy and the Aberystwyth University Women’s Rugby Team for supporting us. This event is a series of many organised by the University after they kindly nominated us as charity of the year. Each year we need to raise £6.5 million to keep our four helicopters flying. This extremely generous donation will ensure we are able to continue our lifesaving work.” So far the team have raised just over £1,000 and are continuing to fundraise via their JustGiving page.
