David grew up in London and qualified in Newcastle upon Tyne. He trained in Newcastle, Nottingham and Bristol and also completed a research MD(Res) at University College London. In addition, he did two overseas periods in Australia and military deployments in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia since 2001 and was Clinical Director of the Severn Trauma Network between 2011 and 2021. His pre-hospital work has been mainly at London’s Air Ambulance where he first worked in 1997 and has held a number of roles there including consultant, research lead and charity trustee. He is Hon. Professor at the University of Bristol and Queen Mary University of London and also currently holds the Gibson Professorship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is immediate past Chair of the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
