The annual Pentyrch Open Gardens is due to take place this weekend and will raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance.

Every year, viewers are treated to a variety of different sized gardens, styles and gorgeous views, which showcases the enthusiasm of the owner’s hard work. This year will see 17 gardens open between Saturday 6 July to Sunday 7 July.

Tickets for the popular event are priced at £7 each and 50%the profits will go to the lifesaving Charity.

Wales Air Ambulance delivers advanced lifesaving medical care, and is the only air ambulance charity based in, and dedicated to, the people of Wales. The highly skilled crew onboard the Charity helicopters and rapid response vehicles can carry out medical procedures that would usually only be available within a hospital setting.

It is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the Charity’s vehicles.

As a pan-Wales service, the dedicated crews, regardless of where they are based, will travel the length and breadth of the country to deliver emergency lifesaving care.

Pentyrch Open Gardens has been running since 1999 and has raised money for charity and local community projects. Each year the event normally raises between £1,500 to £2,500 and in total has raised around £150,000.

Reflecting on why the event has chosen the lifesaving Charity, Helen Edwards said: “The gardeners choose a charity at the annual general meeting, and I suggested the Wales Air Ambulance when I was visiting my elderly mother for many weeks in University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and realised how often the Wales Air Ambulance was on the roof! One of our gardeners was attended by the air ambulance but sadly he died.

“We have run the event every year since 1999 except for the year of the Olympics and Queen's Jubilee, and during covid times when we ran a virtual open gardens event.”

Laura Coyne, Wales Air Ambulance’s Community Fundraising Manager, said: “Thank you to all the gardeners who work extremely hard all year, to put their gardens in the spotlight to raise funds for the Charity and village. The gardeners hard work is really appreciated, and we are incredibly grateful for the continued support.

“To everyone involved in the organising, and to those who will participate in the event, we would like to say a huge thank you. Every year, we need to raise £11.2 million, and support like this helps to keep our helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road. This event will make a lifesaving difference.”

There will also be a plant sale, as well as delicious homemade light refreshments.
