Herefordshire Golf Club has raised over £4,000 for two air ambulance charities.

The Wales Air Ambulance and Midlands Air Ambulance have both benefitted from being chosen as the club’s charities of the year by men’s captain Andrew Weston and ladies captain Jo Hawes.

The whole club came together to support the charities and raised vital funds for the lifesaving causes.

The Wales Air Ambulance operates 24/7 throughout Wales, the Charity needs to raise £11.2 million every year to keep the helicopters flying and its rapid response vehicles on the road.

The air ambulance service in Wales is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the charity’s vehicles.

This is the first time that Herefordshire Golf Club has raised funds for the Wales Air Ambulance, Andrew said: “We both felt the Wales Air Ambulance was a worthy cause. Jo lives in England and I live in Wales so the funds raised were split between the Wales Air Ambulance Charity and Midlands Air Ambulance.

“Although I have only lived in Wales for seven years, we frequently see the Wales Air Ambulance and I believe the people of Wales are extremely grateful that they have such an amazing service.”

Several events and collections were held throughout the year, these included raffles during major golfing events for both men’s and mixed competitions, as well as events held at the clubhouse. Local businesses also donated prizes for an online auction in aid of the two charities.

Andrew and three of his friends also set themselves their own challenge, which raised over £2,000 - by undertaking a 72-hole challenge. The challenge saw them playing four rounds in one day!

Andrew said: “We are extremely pleased with the amount raised during our Captaincy year and thanks has to go to all the people (both members and friends) who donated. Other golfers both at The Herefordshire Golf Club, as well as further afield were very supportive of our efforts.”

Debra Sima, Regional Fundraising Manager, said: “It was wonderful to hear that Herefordshire Golf Club had chosen two air ambulance charities to fundraise for. Air Ambulance services are vital to the public and we would not be able to keep this essential 24/7 service going without support from the people of the public. Herefordshire Golf Club have raised an incredible amount of money, and we are extremely grateful. Their support will help us to continue to be there for the people of Wales when they need us most.”
