An intrepid fundraiser is setting off on a mission to Everest Base Camp in aid of the Wales Air Ambulance charity.

Steve Williams, of Swansea, a Community First Responder for the Welsh Ambulance Service, is setting off for Nepal and the world’s biggest mountain on 25 April as part of a group of 12.

The team aim to complete the challenge in 14 days, trekking from Lukla at the foot of Mount Everest to one of the two famous Base Camps and back.

Speaking of his upcoming challenge, Steve said: “I have completed many runs, rides and even the Three Peaks Challenge but this is by far my biggest test to date.

“I have first-hand experience in emergency situations and know how crucial time is in saving lives.

“This is why I picked Wales Air Ambulance as my chosen charity. I hope to raise over £2,000 for them.”

The guided trek will include acclimatization days to help deal with the altitude sickness but Steve has some extra inspiration to help him along.

He said: “I’m being joined on the challenge by my friend and former colleague David Hawkshaw, which is a real bonus for motivation.

“I’m also doing this in memory of my late father, whom I lost in July 2018 after he battled Alzheimer’s.”

Technology permitting, Steve hopes to keep a daily blog during his adventure.

Mark Stevens, Wales Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager, said: “The trek alone is an incredible personal challenge for Steve and deserves respect and support. The fact that he is raising money for us in the process is humbling and we cannot thank him enough. We recently launched a fundraising campaign to promote our aim of becoming a 24/7 service and it is support like this that ensures we will be available for the people of Wales, both day and night.

“Wales Air Ambulance medics are proud to work alongside our Welsh Ambulance colleagues and together we strive to deliver the best possible care for the people of Wales.”

The Wales Air Ambulance is the largest air ambulance service in the UK and needs £8m a year to keep its four life-saving helicopters in the sky.

Since its inception in 2001, the Charity has flown more than 34,000 missions.
