Caring for Yourself

In the early days and weeks, simple acts of self-care can make a difference.

Take Care of Your Body

  • Try to eat small, regular meals — even if your appetite is low.
  • Rest when you can — grief is exhausting, and sleep may be difficult.
  • Stay hydrated — water and simple foods can support your body through stress.
  • Move gently — a short walk, stretching, or fresh air can help ease tension.

Be Kind to Your Mind

  • Accept that your emotions may change hour by hour — this is normal.
  • Give yourself permission to cry, rest, or step away when you need to. It’s ok to say “no” to visitors when you need time and space.
  • Avoid substances like alcohol or drugs to numb feelings — they can delay healing.
  • Try calming practices like deep breathing or quiet time in nature.

Keeping Memories Alive

It’s natural to want to stay connected to the person you lost.

Some people find comfort in:

  • Creating a memory box with photos, letters, or meaningful objects.
  • Writing a journal to express thoughts and memories.
  • Planting a tree or flowers in their honour.
  • Sharing stories about them with friends and family.

Grieving does not mean forgetting. You can hold on to memories and still move forward.
