World rally drivers are back for second cycle challenge

12/07/2010

Famous names from the world of rally driving have teamed up again to cycle across Wales in aid of Wales Air Ambulance and Spinal Research.

Last year the group known as the WRC-BRC (Welsh Rally Cyclists - Beicwyr Rali Cymru) raised over £20,000 for two nominated charities, and this year they hope to raise even more as they cycle from Holyhead to Swansea in six days.

Starting 12 July the special team of cyclists, which includes British rally champions Mark Higgins, Gwyndaf Evans and world rally co-driver Phill Mills, will journey through the heart of Wales before ending on the rally finish ramp at the Swansea Bay Rally on Saturday 17 July.

Event organiser Mark Lewis is encouraging everyone to support the cyclists as they travel through Wales and if possible even join the cyclists on route.  The team will also be stopping at various locations for special fundraising activities to help raise much-needed funds for the chosen charities.

Lewis said: "When we started this event last year we could never have believed we would raise so much money, and that's what we are aiming to do again this year.”

Rally champion Mark Higgins said: “Between us we have completed thousands of rally miles.  But when it comes to cycling it’s done in a gym or to keep fit on local roads, not over mountain ranges and certainly not with so many rally competitors alongside – it's bound to get a bit competitive over the mountains at times!

“Ultimately our main aim in coming together for this challenge is to raise as much money as we can for Wales Air Ambulance and Spinal Research.  Everyone involved in motorsport knows how vital it is to keep these charities funded, so it's very important to us to raise as much cash as we can.”

Rhodri Davies, fundraising manager at Wales Air Ambulance, who will be cycling with the team on Day Six says: “We are thrilled that the members of WRC – BRC have again nominated Wales Air Ambulance as one of the two beneficiaries from this gruelling cycle challenge,”

“By undertaking the difficult route from Holyhead to Swansea they will not only help raise much needed funds for the charity, but also raise awareness of the work of the air ambulance crews who continue to save lives across Wales every day.”
